Massage Therapy

The lymphatic system is part of the circulatory system, know as the body's "waste" disposal.  It clears away bacteria, excess water, cell debris, and proteins from the connective tissue and returns it to the bloodstream for removal by the kidneys.

Lymphatic drainage massage increases lymphatic circulation and helps detoxify the body.  Lymph capillaries have no valves, so the lymph flows in all directions and relies on the movement of smooth muscles to transport fluids through the lymph vessels.

Surgical procedures (cosmetic, medical, or cancer treatments) can cause lymph fluid to build up in a particular area of the body causing swelling, a condition known as Lymphedema.

MLD uses gentle, rhythmic skin-stretching techniques to treat post-surgical swelling lymphedema as well as fibrosis.   There is no muscle manipulations involved.

*** MLD for Post-Op does NOT involve the pushing of fluid (or blood) to leave the body through incision sites.  It is a gentle pumping technique used to stretch the skin, guiding and stimulating the body to reabsorb the fluid so that it may be expelled through urination.

MLD is contraindicated, NOT recommended to anyone who has CHF.
